Abstract: Â This study aims to explain the views of Sultan Zainal Abidin Syah of the Tidore Sultanate regarding West Irian in his attempt to return West Irian to Tidore and Indonesia. The research method used is the historical method with heuristics in the form of: literature studies, document studies and interviews, then criticism, interpretation and historiography. The results of this study explained that the efforts of the Dutch to separate West Irian from Indonesia, began with the holding of the Malino conference which made the territory of Indonesia a federal state which then made Sultan Zainal Abidin Syah object. Efforts from the Netherlands to negotiate the West Irian issue were also made by inviting Sultan Zainal Abidin and the Sultan of Ternate to board a Dutch warship to Hollandia (now Jayapura). After the dissolution of the United States of Indonesia, Sultan Zainal Abidin was given a mandate by President Soekarno to help claim the territory of West Irian so that it would be included in Indonesia, who on 17 August 1956 was later appointed Governor of the first Province of West Irian with its capital Soasio, Tidore. Sultan Zainal Abidin served as Governor of West Irian until 1961, and thereafter assisted in the preparatory efforts for the Trikora operation.
