Abstrak: Artikel ini membahas Etos, Pandangan Dunia, dan simbol-simbol Sakral dalam pandangan Clifford Geertz dengan menggunakan metode Kualitatif deskriptif dan pendekatan intepretatif. Kajian tentang pemikiran Geertz ini dilakukan dengan tujuan mendeskripsikan tentang bagaimana Clifford Geertz melihat Etos, Pandangan Dunia dan simbol-simbol yang dipunyai oleh manusia terhadap suatu golongan sehingga menamakannya sebagai simbol-simbol suci yang bersifat normatif serta mempunyai kekuatan yang besar dalam pelaksanaannya. Maka dapat diketahui bahwa hal itu disebabkan oleh simbol-simbol suci yang bersumber pada etos dan pandangan hidup merupakan dua unsur paling hakiki bagi eksistensi manusia dan juga karena simbol-simbol suci ini tidak bisa dilepaskan dalam kehidupan manusia sehari-hari, sebagaimana Geertz menegaskan bahwa agama semata-mata bukanlah sebuah metafisik. Meskipun Geertz adalah seorang ahli antopolog akan tetapi menurut Asad penelitiannya belumlah kompleks karena dari definisi tersebut Geertz hanya menggambarkan bagaimana simbol-simbol suci membentuk pengetahuan dan sikap manusia terhadap hidup. Geertz belum menampakkan bagaimana pengertian simbol-simbol suci yang telah dipengaruhi oleh pengalaman-pengalaman manusia dalam kehidupan nyata. Oleh karena itu memformulasikan konsepsi-konsepsi mengenai suatu hukum yang berlaku dilingkungan masyarakat sangatlah penting.
Abstract: This article discusses the Ethos, WorldView, and Sacred symbols in Clifford Geertz's view using descriptive Qualitative methods and interpretive approaches. This study of Geertz's thinking was conducted to describe how Clifford Geertz saw the Ethos, WorldView, and symbols that man had of a group, thus naming them as normative sacred symbols and having great power in their execution. So it can be known that it is caused by sacred symbols derived from the ethos and view of life are two of the most intrinsic elements for human existence and also because these sacred symbols can not be released in everyday human life, as Geertz asserts that religion is not merely metaphysical. Although Geertz is an anthologist, according to Asad his research has not been complex because of this definition Geertz only describes how sacred symbols shape human knowledge and attitudes towards life. Geertz has not yet revealed how the understanding of sacred symbols has been influenced by human experiences in real life. Therefore formulating conceptions of a law that applies in the community is very important.References
